Job Summary 


Provides supervision to staff and oversees refugee residential youth group home operations, ensuring that appropriate services are provided to youth residents as required by state and federal laws, contractual and licensing requirements and applicable service standards. Nurtures a family-like environment in the residence including supporting behaviors and expectations. 


Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Provide on-going leadership to staff. Partner with Human Resources in talent acquisition and retention efforts. Assist in preparation and implementation of relevant professional development, training and performance management. Facilitate program related team meetings.
  2. Establish and maintain staff work schedules ensuring the supervision and safety of all youth in the residence.
  3. Ensure all paperwork, reports and incidents reports are completed as required, maintaining compliance. Ensure performance outcome measures meet required standards.
  4. Assist in program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Monitor quality to ensure services and reports meet or exceed required standards. Audit case records to ensure completeness and compliance with prescribed contract, service and licensing standards.
  5. Oversee all functions of managing daily operations of the group home.
  6. Oversee general home maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and activities. Ensure all equipment and supplies, including leased van vehicle, are used and maintained in a safe and efficient manner.
  7. Monitor and enforce building safety, health, fire prevention, sanitation and smoking regulations. Conduct appropriate fire and weather related drills.
  8. Serve as the subject matter expert and ensure staff are trained on how to effectively utilize crisis intervention, behavior management and restraint techniques. Implement measures to evaluate staff utilization of techniques. Provide corrective measures if needed.


Job Qualifications 


Education, Training, and Licensure/Certification

  • A Master's degree in a human behavioral science from an accredited college or university and two years of experience as a social service worker and two years of experience in a child care institution. OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in a human behavioral science or another major with 25% of the credits in a human behavioral science from an accredited college or university and four years' experience as a social service worker and two years of experience in a child care institution.
  • Licensed by the State of Michigan preferred.
  • Certified as a Trainer in Behavior Management Techniques preferred.
  • First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Instructor certified preferred.



  • One year experience in a supervisory role preferred.
  • Experience working with youth, in a group home or residential setting preferred.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to speak, read and write English. Bilingual in Spanish (or the major language of the youth in care) preferred.
  • Ability to be culturally sensitive.
  • Understanding of the developmental needs and effective management of youth in care. Advanced knowledge of appropriate discipline, crisis intervention and child handling techniques. Knowledge of proper and safe methods and techniques of restraint.
  • Ability to work creatively and effectively in team setting as well as independently, with other professionals from various community groups agencies and disciplines.
  • Advanced ability to read, write and interpret legal and technical documents.
  • Ability to understand, analyze and interpret financial reports and effect corrective action.
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize Microsoft Office package and program specific software.


Additional Work Requirements


  • Valid unrestricted driver's license with a good driving record. Proof of automobile insurance. Reliable personal transportation suitable for transporting persons served.
  • Participate in a system of 24 hour on-call availability to house, may be required to be on shift to ensure adequate coverage for compliance.
