Outpatient Child and Family Therapist

(Regular Full Time / Exempt)

Outpatient therapist provides intensive clinical therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and adults with identified mental health or substance abuse diagnosis. This service is designed to meet the specific mental health needs of the identified client as they relate to their diagnosis and can be provided in-office, or other approved/appropriate community setting. Outpatient therapy includes psychoeducational activities/interventions designed to assist the client of the reduction of dysfunction. Services are provided with client-centered and family-centered approaches and are delivered through intensive, time-limited, goal specific, evidence-based interventions.



  • Provides diagnostic evaluations and subsequent psychotherapy for outpatient services utilizing individual, family, marital and group modalities.
  • Evaluates and provides therapeutic interventions for child (under 12), adolescent (13-18) and adult patients requesting mental health services. Assessment performed with complete formulation, differential diagnosis, treatment and safety planning. Therapy consists of evidenced-based approaches for intervention and management strategies, including family therapy. 
  • Provides therapeutic interventions to the identified client in order to enhance and foster the client’s optimal functioning and interactions in the home and community.
  • Works cooperatively with treatment team members and the family in the provision of services to meet the goals developed in a Person Centered Plan.
  • Provides documentation for service delivery including treatment goals, progress notes and billing.
  • Provides therapy and counseling services to clients (individual, families, and group) on a weekly basis.
  • Prepares written assessments, develop client centered treatment plans, and service recommendations. 
  • May carry a caseload of clients (26 direct service hours per 40 hour work week.)  Will be expected to maintain a flexible work schedule to meet both client and program needs.
  • Meets on a regular basis with the Clinical Director for consultation/supervision.
  • Will follow professional associations Code of Ethics regarding client treatment, confidentiality, standards of care, and professional conduct.
  • Participates in consultation, evaluation, and Utilization Reviews with Children’s Home Consulting Psychiatrist and Consulting Psychologist.
  • Provide clinical directions and consultation to the unit treatment team.
  • Consult as needed with other members of the treatment team, including medical personnel, consulting psychiatrist, and educational coordinator.
  • Facilitate quarterly trainings in the staff training module.


Education:  Masters Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related fields. 

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of post master's practice experience under appropriate supervision in applied psychotherapy with a minimum of one (1) year practicing with a majority pediatric population (0-18 years) and of one (1) year practicing with a majority adult population. OR Minimum of one (1) year of post-doctoral practice experience (formal fellowship or otherwise) under appropriate supervision in applied psychotherapy with a majority pediatric population (0-18 years), but also including practice experience with an adult population. 

Registration, licenses, certifications or special training:

Current Michigan master’s level mental health license (LMSW, LLMSW, LPC, etc.); Valid Michigan driver’s license, auto insurance, and good driving record.  Membership in a national professional association which ascribed to a professional Code of Ethics preferred.
